Wanna see something cool? Go to Toronto Comic Arts Festival

May 8, 2018 by Displate Artists Team in Illustration Hub

Two-day exhibition will feature hundreds of comics creators from around the world. They will share their approach to art and comics during various panels, interviews, and workshops. Every lesson and every trick will be learned and shown on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13. To fully appreciate the TCAF here’s a highlight of all things we recommend you to see.

Hokey Noir

Everyone knows that Canada loves Hokey. That’s why TCAF, Ensemble contemporain de Montreal (ECM+) and Continuum Contemporary Music prepared a show like no other. They’ve mixed comic books with opera and hokey. Hokey Noir is a story of rivalry, crime, lust, love, blood, and betrayal. The opera was written by Cecil Castellucci and features artwork by Toronto illustrator Kymberlyn Porter.

Shows: May 10th and 11th at 8 pm, and a 2 pm matinee on May 11th. For more info and tickets, check out continuummusic.org.

Word Balloon Academy

Word Balloon Academy will be a full day of creator-focused programming and workshop for comic creators and industry members. Since the festival is free of charge and open for non-exhibitors as well, to attend WBA you have to register first.

The panels will consist of sessions like Manga Secrets and Process, Comics as a Side-Hustle and Cooperating with Comics Press to name a few. It sounds like serious learning experience especially if you’re into making comic books your future job.

You can still register on https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tcaf-presents-word-balloon-academy-2018-registration-45732621502

Comics x Games 2018

The panel that would be created just for me with ease. The talks will offer a glimpse of comic artists and publishers venturing into the world of digital and tabletop games. The attendees will gain insights into the creative vision and development process behind two different but complementary disciplines and meet artists forging new paths through the Comics x Games scene.

Zineland Terrace

This zine fair includes two days of programming where creators share knowledge around self-publishing and zine culture to build audiences. May 12-13 at 11am-5pm. Cumberland Terrace (across from Toronto Reference Library). Free.

Few Guests

One of the guests at TCAF is Emily Carroll – an Eisner Award-winning illustrator and author of Through the Woods. As she stated, Toronto Comic Arts Festival is great for independent artists because every single one of them makes something new and neat to look at that you haven’t seen a commercial for on TV.

Michael DeForge is another guest, who gained serious rep while landing a designer job on Adventure Time show! He’s a vanguard of a fusion comics and you can grab his solo comics Lose as it’s mind-bending!
You can meet and greet Eddie Campbell as well – an award-winning comics writer and artist. He’s probably best known for his collaboration with Alan Moore on From Hell!

Or even Cecil Castellucci – a veteran in the comic book world, but a fresh artist at DC Comics, currently working on critically acclaimed Shade, The Changing Girl/ Woman comics for the Young Animal imprint. Truly inspiring stuff.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There will be many, many more artists and guests to shake hands and chat about comic book art.

Don’t forget, TCAF starts May 12!
