The Best New Movie Remakes & Reboots

March 24, 2026 by Displate Editorial in Culture & Fandom

So, we decided to embrace this whole genre (can we call it that?) and compile our own movie remakes list, balancing nostalgia with bold reinvention. We scoured film forums, critics’ takes, and box office charts to come up with this list.

Whether you love a reimagining of cult classics or are vehemently against touching the perfection of the OGs, you can’t deny that there has been a rise of movie remakes hitting our screens, introducing new audiences to the stories and welcoming back old ones with fresh takes.

Why This Remake Movie List? (Our Totally Scientific, Not-at-All Biased Method)

Some of these films are critical darlings. Others are controversial. But all of them prove that remakes and reboots are now an undeniable part of the modern cinema-going experience.

Read on for our top 13 remake picks—and if you’re feeling inspired, you can even bring your favorites home with some seriously cool Displate posters!

1. Dune (2021)

David Lynch’s 1984 Dune was ambitious but messy. Dennis Villeneuve’s 2021 version finally cracked the code, turning Frank Herbert’s dense sci-fi saga into a cinematic masterpiece. With jaw-dropping visuals, Oscar-winning design, and a cast led by the indomitable Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya (so good, she can just go by her first name), this remake showed that even “unfilmable” novels can thrive on the big screen.

2. A Star Is Born (2018)

Fun fact, this version was actually the fourth version of Hollywood’s tale of love and loss in the music industry. Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut paired with Lady Gaga’s powerhouse performance, made it one of the best-reviewed remakes of the decade. It just goes to show that some stories are worth telling again and again.

3. West Side Story (2021)

Steven Spielberg’s movie remake of the 1961 classic musical was both reverent and refreshing. With updated choreography, authentic casting, and Spielberg’s signature cinematic magic, this was one of those rare remakes that critics got behind and even got Ariana DeBose an Oscar for her role as Anita.

4. It (2017)

Stephen King’s terrifying clown Pennywise floated back into theatres with this remake of the 1990 original. Bill Skarsgård’s unsettling performance, paired with modern horror effects, made IT one of the most successful horror movie remakes ever.

5. The Batman (2022)

Okay, this one is technically a reboot, not a remake, but it does still belong on this list. Matt Reeves’ noir-inspired Gotham, with Robert Pattinson as a brooding, rookie Dark Knight, showed that even Batman still has fresh stories to tell. It might just be the grittiest (and most emo) version yet, and fans loved it.

6. Freaky Friday (2003 & 2025)

The original 1978 body-swap comedy was a bit ‘meh’. But the Freaky Friday 2003 movie remake? Now you’re talking. This cult classic became a staple of teen sleepovers thanks to the brilliant chemistry between Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Now, more than 20 years later, the duo is back in Freakier Friday. Proof, if any were needed, that some stories never get old, they just get stranger.

7. Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Yet another Disney remake of a classic musical. With Emma Watson as Belle, a talking CGI candelabra, and songs that defined a generation, this live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast stuck closely to the 1991 animated original and became a box office juggernaut.

8. The Lion King (2019)

Disney’s “live-action” remake (okay, photorealistic CGI) of the classic cartoon, The Lion King (1994), sparked fierce debate. Was it groundbreaking visual storytelling, or just karaoke of the 1994 original? Either way, the movie roared to success at the box office and cemented its spot among the top new remakes of old movies.

9. Aladdin (2019)

With Guy Ritchie at the helm, and (pre-Oscar slap) Will Smith stepping into Robin Williams’ Genie-sized shoes, Aladdin brought dazzling visuals and new songs to the beloved animated story. Sure, it was risky, but it found a new audience while reminding fans of what made the original so beloved.

10. Ghostbusters (2016)

A gender-flipped reboot of the perennial 1984 classic supernatural comedy, this one stirred up a huge debate online. But divisive or not, it sparked a cultural conversation and gave us a new team of proton-pack-wielding heroes. Whether you loved the humor or missed the old crew, Ghostbusters (2016) definitely earns its place on any film remakes list.

11. Mean Girls (2024)

Fetch is happening again. This new film remake reimagined the 2004 cult teen comedy as a full-blown musical. Some fans found it unnecessary, others loved the Broadway energy; either way, it proved that Regina George never really leaves the spotlight.

12. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Tim Burton’s gothic take on the Roald Dahl classic split audiences straight down the middle. Johnny Depp’s eccentric Willy Wonka was a far cry from Gene Wilder’s iconic performance, but love or hate it, this is one entry that rightly deserves its place in any list of remake films.

13. Robocop (2014)

One of the most controversial picks on our movie remake list. Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original Robocop was a biting, violent satire. The 2014 remake attempted to modernize the concept with sleek visuals and commentary on drones and the surveillance state. It didn’t land with everyone, but it gave the franchise a new audience.

Bring the Remakes Home

Whatever your opinion of them, remakes and reboots spark endless debates. Some see them as soulless cash grabs, while others see them as fresh opportunities to reimagine beloved classics. But whether you’re Team Original or Team Remake, there’s no denying these films have cemented themselves in pop culture.

And if you want to bring a little bit of that movie magic home? You can shop our range of movie and TV posters on Displate: from the iconic originals to the remakes that stirred up all the nostalgia (and mixed reactions).
