Living and creating in Brazil, Thiago Correa makes his art all about spiritualism and… cats. He told us about his passions and influences, and as much as we know that his designs are magical, we don’t need tarot reading to see that he has a bright future ahead of him.
Where do you live?
I’m currently living in Petropolis, Brazil. It’s a rainy town in the hills of Rio de Janeiro.
What does your studio look like?
I like to have art books and illustration magazines close at hand to keep me inspired. I also decorate my studio with works of other artists. And, of course, my cat is always around supervising me while I’m working.
Ok. So you obviously like cats. Why are they one of your favorite subjects?
I’m obsessed with cats! Cats are mysterious and independent, they are such fascinating creatures. Cats are the most special companions that we have!
How does spiritualism influence your art?
Themes as astrology and magic are my main influences, I love the mystical aesthetic. I’m currently studying tarot reading and this symbolism is pretty strong in my works. I believe spiritualism is one of my biggest inspirations.
What are your other inspirations?
Surrealism, fairy tales and mythology are definitely pretty strong inspirations for me.
If you could think of one artist to grab a coffee with, who would it be?
I’d love to grab a coffee with Pamela Colman Smith. She was a British artist, illustrator, writer, and occultist who illustrated the traditional Rider-Waite Tarot Deck. I’d learn a lot from her! It’d be amazing!
How would you describe your biggest success by far?
I think my biggest success is the cats’ tarot deck. I’ve been working on this collection since 2019 and I’m going to draw all the tarot cards as cats. It’s a work in progress but definitely my favorite project!
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not creating?
Traveling is one of my greatest passions and I love seeing new places in my free time. I also enjoy watching movies, reading, and petting my cat when I’m not working and creating!
Capture your style in 3 words.
Fantasy, witchcraft and cats.
What are your plans for the future?
Keep creating, experimenting, studying, and moving forward! I would also love to travel around the world knowing new inspiring places and cultures.
