Calling himself just a humble artist, Jason Ratliff is definitely way more. Living in Indianapolis and working in advertisement, he mixes traditional drawing and digital techniques in his art. He told us about the walking shadows and inspirations taken from movies, so scroll down and get to know his work.
Where do you live?
I live in Indianapolis, Indiana in the U.S.
Are you a professional or self-taught?
A little of both. I studied and currently work in advertising. I also had a variety of fine art courses but my art is mostly styles of my own exploration.
You are clearly a big movie and comic book fan, am I right? Where does this passion come from?
I enjoy them both, yeah. More so movies than comic books but they’re both really great forms of escapism. My entertainment is a huge source of inspiration.
How did you come up with the idea for ‘Walking Shadows’?
It was my process that led to the idea. A combination of two unfinished pieces that led me down the road. The greater meanings of potential and dreams and inner beauty developed over time as I explored the idea. I wish I could say that it came fully formed but it took time for me to find its message.
When and how did you notice a growing interest in your designs?
I noticed with my first few published pieces from the Walking Shadow series. It was a snowball effect where the comments and messages flooded my inbox. It was really the first time anyone took notice.
The series mentioned above is your most popular one. What else do you normally draw?
It really depends on when and what inspiration strikes. Sometimes it’s related to pop-culture or world events. Sometimes it’s just my own random ideas.
What techniques do you use to create?
Most of my work is a mix of pen & ink and digital. I use Adobe and Procreate for the digital stuff.
What are your plans for the future?
Hopefully, I’ll still have new ideas and I’ll still be able to make them a reality!
