The New Party
First, the main gang: the New Party. A motley crew of adventurers on a journey to Aureole — and beyond. A victorious mage, her apprentice, and a powerful warrior — what could go wrong?
Frieren
It’s your girl, Frieren, the member of the Party of Heroes and deceptively young-looking ancient elf mage. Seriously, over 1000 years old.
As we join Frieren on her journey to discover more about humanity, we learn of her deep-seated hatred for demons and why they call her ‘Frieren the Slayer’. You might think she’s aloof and indifferent, but behind that shield of ice is a heart of gold; she fears, loves, and cares for others just like her human companions do.
Fern
Frieren’s right-hand man (well, girl), Fern, is a troubled but charming young human mage with a backstory that’ll tug right on your heartstrings. A war orphan who is rescued from jumping to her death in a ravine by hero and tutor, Heiter, Fern hasn’t had it easy by any means.
Heiter took her under his wing and taught her everything he knew. Later, Fern became Frieren’s (somewhat reluctant) apprentice — and under her guidance, took her mage skills to exceptional new heights. Strong-willed but ultimately warm to those she loves, Fern is an emotional anchor for Frieren, a bit like a little sister and a grounding presence on their long journey.
Stark
Our resident frontline fighter, Stark, is the Rolls to Frieren and Fern’s Royce – bringing the muscle while they bring the magic, so to speak. Raised by an OG of The Party of Heroes, Eisen, and ultimately replacing him on Frieren’s adventure when the dwarf succumbs to old age, Stark is the perfect blend of timid but strong, loyal and fierce. On top of this, he’s still figuring out his interactions with Fern, with their evolving relationship becoming one of the highlights of the story.
Sein
While not an original Frieren party member, we had to include Sein on our list: a perfectly imperfect priest who serves to prove that even the godliest of souls can be flawed. Sure, he should be praying instead of paying for alcohol and cigarettes, gambling and pining after older women, but maybe he’s just here for a good time, so who are we to judge?
Despite appearances, Sein actually feels deeply for those around him. Out of consideration for his brother, he once gave up his dream of becoming an adventurer. An astute observer, he is quick to see the inner workings of the people around him, making him a surprisingly good mediator of relationship strife.
The Party of Heroes
Excuse us if we get misty-eyed for this next part — nostalgia has that effect on us. This party battled together for ten years until they slayed the Demon King and parted ways. Though through many flashbacks it’s clear the time they spent together changed them all forever.
Himmel
Our handsome hero and leader of The Party of Heroes, Himmel.
Hero he may be, humble he is not. But given he slayed the Demon King, we’ll forgive his slight boastfulness and obsession with self-image. He is a sculptor’s worst nightmare — you’ll know what we mean when you see it. Yet despite this shortcoming, he proves to be a kind and honorable man, dedicated to protecting those around him.
Heiter
Got space for one more vice-loving cleric on your list? Heiter, a green-haired, cheerful-mannered priest who drinks plenty more than he should, brings Fern into the equation, raising her and entrusting her to Frieren just before he joins Himmel in the afterlife.
Often spotted with a tankard or bottle in his hand, Heiter might not fit the usual image of a holy man — in Frieren’s Party, he brings lightheartedness to any situation, cracking jokes and infecting everyone with his cheerful laugh.
Eisen
This dwarven warrior is an exceptionally talented fighter and makes a worthy addition to the party before living out his final days in peace.
Somewhat hard-headed and careless, he has a reckless battle style that surprises a lot of people. Insanely fast, strong, and durable (we’ve never seen anyone jump off so many cliffs without a scratch before), this axe-wielding dwarf still finds time to make funny quips that you can’t help but smirk at.
Demons
Now, time for the ‘baddies’. One surefire way to anger an entire race of monsters? Slay their King and skip off into the peaceful blue sky.
Aura
Frieren’s old foe and the Demon King’s fearsome general, Aura, turns her victims into puppets by weighing the mana of two souls (her own and her opponent’s) using the Scales of Obedience before decapitating them. Ironically, Frieren turns this Guillotine-like power back on her, causing her to chop her own head off in her final battle.
Lügner
One of the earliest demons we encounter in the season, Lügner, crosses paths with Frieren in Graf Granat’s Domain, where he presents himself as a peaceful emissary — which we soon discover is far from the truth. With his loyal servants Draht and Linie, he worms his way into the politics of the Domain, meticulously advancing the Aura’s plans.
Draht
Cruel as they come, Draht is a loyal servant, but can’t match Lügner’s calm calculation, often landing himself in unexpected trouble. Arrogant and quick to act rather than think, Draht proves that a demon’s lack of emotions is truly their weak point.
Linie
Small in stature and blindly faithful to Lügner, Linie may seem unassuming at first but soon proves otherwise. In the past, she witnessed Eisen’s fighting style and adopted many of his techniques.
Qual
This one fits more of the typical demon image: sharp teeth and claws, protruding horns, and reattached limbs — not to mention his monstrous size. Also known as the Elder Sage of Corruption, Qual possesses powerful magic, infamous for creating the killing magic Zoltraak, which he used to commit many atrocities during the Demon King’s reign.
Mages
Just like the demons, the mages just keep on coming. Here’s a quick rundown of those you should take stock of:
Wirbel
A second-class mage and captain of the Northern Magic Corps. He demonstrates his skill and experience throughout the exams, later passing with distinction.
Denken
Both a second-class mage and an Imperial Mage. Although the oldest participant, that doesn’t hold him back.
Methode
A powerful mind-controlling mage with “weird girl” energy — Serie literally calls her a “weirdo” in a subtle power move during the third-stage exam.
Sense and Genau
First-class mages who serve as proctors for the First-Class Mage Examinations. Falsch is another mage who was meant to join the group.
Kanne
A third-class mage who participates in the First-Class Mage Exam, working alongside Frieren and her friend Lawine in the first stage of the exam.
Lawine
A third-class mage, alongside Kanne. She specializes in manipulating ice, which proves very useful in the exam trials.
Übel
A first-class mage and a known troublemaker — as becomes clear during the First-Class Mage Exam.
Lernen
One of Serie’s apprentices and the first mage to ascend to first-class rank after the Continental Magic Association was founded.
Everybody Else…
