The Biggest Game Releases Coming in 2025

April 10, 2025 by Displate Editorial in Pop Culture

From long-awaited sequels to innovative new IPs, 2025 is shaping out to be an extremely promising one for new game releases. This year’s line-up is a real mixed bag, including star-studded titles with new installments, alongside a collection of new games that push the boundaries of storytelling, graphics, and mechanics further than ever before.

Whether you’re a seasoned RPG adventurer, a competitive crack shot who loves FPSs, or a strategic mastermind who can always be found playing puzzling games, there’s a whole host of titles due to land this year for you to get excited about.

So, grab your favorite headset, dust off your controller, and make room on your hard drive — it’s going to be quite the year.

January

Citizen Sleeper 2

Kicking off 2025 strong, gamers can expect another Citizen Sleeper game to grace their screens at the end of January.

Since the first game was released in 2022, its text-driven adventure was immediately a hit, giving players a satisfying activity-based game with an entertaining level of chance. Estimated for release on January 31st, we hope that Citizen Sleeper 2 will bring gamers even more space station RPG immersion.

February

Civilization VII

Confirmed by developer Firaxis Games, Civilization VII is set to be released on February 11th of this year. As with each new entry in the Civilization story, we’re introduced to a new narrator — this time Gwendoline Christie.

And what can we expect from the gameplay? The gameplay showcase at Gamescom Opening Night Live (August 20, 2024) gave us a good indication of the exceptional quality and high calibre of this game, but that’s all that’s been revealed for now. Available on all major consoles from Windows and PS5 to the Nintendo Switch, we can’t wait to dive into the different Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern ages in this game.

Avowed

Another release set for February (estimated for release on the 18th) is Avowed. Originally pitched as a new take on The Elder Scrolls RPG by Obsidian Studios, Avowed is a perfect option for fans of Skyrim. In recent years, Obsidian has produced some impressive and greatly successful titles — Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, to name a few — which bodes extremely well for Avowed to join their ranks.

March

Split Fiction

Moving into March, we have Split Fiction, a title that caused quite the stir when announced at the Game Awards back in 2024. Blending sci-fi and fantasy, this co-op action-adventure game from Josef Fores allows gamers to play as two aspiring novelists who are looking to get their works published, tackling a number of challenges in the process.

Set for release on March 6th, we’re excited to see a new multiplayer game prove that this genre is more than just friendly competition.

Assassins Creed Shadows

A controversial entry on our list, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set for release on March 20th. There’s been plenty of discourse around this title from Ubisoft but, regardless, with a new setting in Edo period Japan, Shadows offers players the opportunity to delve into more action and switch between two stealthy warriors (Yasuke and Naoe).

What’s more, Ubisoft has revealed that the game will feature much less ‘hand-holding’ in the form of map icons, encouraging more player-driven exploration, which bodes well for more adventurous, free-spirited players out there.

April

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

In April, we have an epic throwback to gaming history coming our way. After a staggering 26 years without a new Fatal game since Garou: Mark of the Wolves (1999), SNK is bringing us a long-awaited sequel to their fighting game series. Since so much time has passed since the previous game, players can expect vast improvements in graphics and even more sleek gameplay (if the teaser trailer from August 2024 is anything to go by).

Now available to preorder on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is set to be a magnificent comeback for “Hungry Wolf” Terry Bogard.

May

Doom: The Dark Ages

In May, another retro gaming classic has been rumoured to make a reappearance in the form of the latest installment in the Doom series.

In this brand-new prequel, players get to experience the thrilling concept of the Doomslayer gone back in time. The so-called “king of first-person shooters” is now let loose in the realm of the medieval — meaning new weapons, new territory, new monsters, and an interesting expansion on the lore and backstory of the Doomslayer.

Summer

Elden Ring: Nightreign

As we move into the later part of the year, the dates for release become less concrete. However, rumoured for release in Spring-Summer 2025 is a new game within the Elden Ring universe: Nightreign.

As a standalone game, Nightreign is set to give Elden Ring’s players a unique gaming experience in the form of a battle royale-style experience. Play alone or team up with other players to discover new monsters and bosses from across the Elden Ring universe.

Mafia: The Old Country

Rumoured for release in Summer 2025 is a new rough and ready game in the Mafia series from Hangar 13.

Switching up from cityscapes and alleyways, The Old Country places players in the rough-hewn Sicilian countryside of the 1900s. Filled with stunning visuals and a whole set of period-authentic weaponry (from handguns to rifles), players must fight for survival as Enzo Favara in this immersive game.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Now, we move to a monumental game and highly-anticipated release: Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, this new game is designed for the Switch — and rightly so, after Nintendo’s recent disappointing Pokemon Switch era.

Expected to be released around the 15th of August 2025, this new Pokémon game is set within Lumiose City, where an exciting new development for a city where Pokémon and people can coexist is underway

Dying Light: The Beast

Another game rumoured for release in the summer is Dying Light: The Beast, a new standalone zombie game. Playing as the hero, Kyle Crane, gamers traverse the post-apocalyptic Castor Woods to hunt their ex-captors after breaking free from 13 years of torture.

With around 18 hours of gameplay, Dying Light is set to be an exciting and immersive game with more psychological depth and open-world exploration than ever before.

TBC Dates

Next up, we have a set of games expected to be released in 2025, but without a solid date yet to be confirmed. There are some epic titles on this list so we just had to include them, regardless of their unknown release date.

Borderlands 4

After the Borderlands movie didn’t perform as well as Gearbox Software had hoped in 2024, Borderlands 4 is set to bring the franchise back and stronger than ever.

Filled with intense action, new weapons, and (most impressively) a whole new planet, gamers can play as one of four new Vault Hunters seeking riches. With a vast array of characters — new and old — Borderlands 4 will bring players more free-form combat and sci-fi world exploration than anywhere else in the franchise.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Remake)

In a curious turn of events, some confidential Microsoft documents were leaked online in 2023, revealing that a remake of the popular Elder Scrolls game, Oblivion, was set to launch in 2025.

Since then, fans have been patiently waiting for this new release, and we’ve been given a few exciting details — namely that the new version will be re-built from the ground up in Unreal Engine and will feature a number of new gameplay elements. Since then, an Xbox insider has stated that the game will launch in June 2025, although we can’t be certain.

Winter

While the last part of the gaming year is uncertain so early on, a few have been given winter release dates so far.

Hell is Us

We had to include this title on our list as it’s expected to offer a gaming experience like no other, according to Rogue Factor’s Creative Director.

Supposedly dropping in December 2025, Hell Is Us (or HiU) is a third-person action-adventure game that unfolds through a complex and mature story. Hell Is Us claims to offer players a break from convention by not using any guides, quest markers, maps, or journals. In fact, the creators have removed traditional narrative aids altogether. Instead, players are encouraged to get close to the game’s universe and rely on their own observations and conversations with other characters. We can’t wait to see how gamers will respond to this one.

Grand Theft Auto VI

Last but not least, the upcoming game on everyone’s minds, GTA6, has been given an expected release date of Fall 2025 by publisher Take-Two. Released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the new GTA game will be set in modern-day Vice City — a location not used by the Franchise since 2006. Players can expect palm trees, neon lights, and all things Miami from this game. See it for yourself in the trailer.
