Taking inspiration from his surroundings, Taiwanese photographer and digital artist Jiajyun Jheng reimagines busy city streets and turns them into bright-new worlds. He puts magic into ordinary settings, and places his characters in a surreal space that asks to be explored. We caught up with him to talk about his inspiration, favorite artists, and creative process. Read the interview below and get to know the artist behind the work.
When and why did you start to create?
I started to get involved with photography four years ago, until last year I began to have an idea of combining different photos, and then I started my creation without knowing it. I love creating surreal worlds as living in a dream and a place where my dreams can become a reality.
What does your normal day look like?
If I’m free, I’ll go out to take pictures. In June, I was still a student. Recently I started to edit photos for car advertisements.
Where do you live, and how does this place influence your art?
I live in Taiwan. My design process involves a combination of both photography and photo manipulation. The unique thing about my works is that most of the objects used are actual shots I took myself here in the streets of Taiwan. It may take more time, but personally, it’s worth it.
What are your biggest inspirations?
Life and my surroundings daily inspire me to create these surreal worlds. Sometimes it’s also thanks to the movies that I watch at home! My art is my way of translating my observations and experiences in life onto the digital canvas.
If you could pick one place to spend much of your time creating, what would it be?
I think it’s still Taiwan. I like my country; this place made me who I am!
Which artist (living or dead) would you like to go out for a coffee and chat with?
Erik Johansson. He inspired me and influenced my creative process.
As an artist, what channels do you consider best for promoting and selling your art?
Of course, it is Displate!
What do you do when you are not creating?
I like to watch movies or go hiking and stop thinking about creating. I need a little time to clear my mind. It is helpful when I start creating next time.
What are your plans for the future?
Most of my works are photo manipulations now, and I will do some 3d artworks or algorithmic art as my next step.
