In 2022, the interior design market size was valued at $130.5 billion and is projected to grow far beyond this figure by 2025.
Owing to the monumental influence of popular apps like TikTok, Pinterest, and Instagram in recent years, it’s safe to say that “what’s hot” and “what’s not” changes extremely quickly. Fleeting social media trends and doom scrolling have definitely played a part in the shortening of trend cycles in everything from fashion to tech — and interior design is definitely not exempt.
In this blog, we take a look at some of the hottest home decor trends at the moment, sharing our predictions on which will continue into 2025 and beyond. From ‘color drenching’ to ‘cozy minimalism’, read on to discover the latest and greatest movements in interior design to inspire your next DIY spur.
Rugs That Make a Statement
While we often don’t consider adding color underfoot, we can expect statement rugs to well and truly take off in 2025. More is more when it comes to interior design at the moment, and with maximalism front of mind, soft furnishings have also taken a turn for the extravagant.
Designers and homeowners have been opting for increasingly bold patterns for their rugs, turning the blank canvas of the floor into an opportunity for expression and pageantry. From animal prints (mostly zebra and tiger) to Aztec prints and clashing colors, statement rugs are rapidly becoming the floor-based feature that no room is complete without.
Jewel Tones
Sticking with the maximalism theme, jewel tones are cropping up across home decor styles at the moment. Even though bold color schemes had their dark days in the ‘beige era’ of the early 2020s, jeweled accents like sapphire, emerald, and amethyst have prevailed.
Adding a dramatic flair to regular color palettes, dazzling jewel tones, chromes, and shimmer paints have been soaring in popularity as accents and focal points recently — and we think 2025 will be their year.
Sleek Tech Integration
We can’t talk about the future without at least one nod towards technology. At the current rate of technological advancement, we’ll all be living in smart homes by 2050. But, until then, technological integration features as a constant desirable in interior design, adding sleek sophistication to those who can afford it.
Discreet tech is all the rage — that is, technology that fits into interior design without trailing wires and obvious fixtures. From curved, slim TVs to hidden speakers and voice-controlled lights, design is getting increasingly technical for the consumer’s convenience and we’re here for it.
Cozy Minimalism
What’s a list of design trends without a mention of minimalism? Ah, but before you write this point off as if you’ve seen it before, allow us to explain what ‘cozy minimalism’ brings to the table.
Unlike the starkness and sparseness associated with traditional minimalism, cozy minimalism offers a new spin on this well-loved trend. Meeting maximalism halfway, cozy minimalism adds a number of soft furnishings and homely touches to rooms in a gentle departure from the unadorned nature of typical minimalist homes.
Perfect for the winter months, cozy minimalism advocates for simplicity without sacrificing on comfort, meaning neutral-toned blankets, cushions, rugs, coasters, and wall hangings are in.
Raw Materials
Next up, we have the ‘raw materials’ or ‘honest furnishings’ trend. In an equally influential movement to maximalism, the trend of stripping design down to its core components has gained huge popularity in recent years — and we expect it to grow further in 2025. Think of the very basics that lie at the heart of all buildings and most pieces of furniture — things like wood, stone, and brick.
Stripping back the layers and patterns of maximalism leaves behind the foundational materials that, when used in combination with each other (or alone as accent pieces), can be extremely visually effective. Curating a calming atmosphere that moves away from highly synthetic materials and processed or dyed fabrics, this design trend is the perfect antidote to the culture of overconsumption that many of us may wish to escape in the new year.
Colour Drenching
Speaking of color… as much as stripping back textures and colors will be popular in 2025, the opposite is also true (Hey, we never said that interior design was simple).
A new technique called ‘color drenching’ has begun to gain traction among designers and homeowners on account of its satisfying visual effect. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this technique, color drenching refers to painting (or ‘drenching’) all surfaces in a room with a singular — usually bold — color to achieve a cohesive, immersive design effect.
Ever walked into someone’s living room and thought, “Wow, they must love blue?”; if their walls, cabinets, and picture frames were all a vivid cobalt, the chances are they might have been trying out color drenching.
A technique favored by maximalists, this trend is expected to take off in 2025 as designers get bolder and more playful with their paint choices, moving ever further away from white or magnolia walls as the default.
Playing to the Senses
It’s not all about the visual, though; sensorial design has taken the interior design world by storm in recent years by bringing previously-overlooked factors like smell, touch, and sound to the fore.
The dominant influence in interior design is, naturally, the visual; however, what a room sounds and smells like has increasingly been considered by designers. This is where elements like electronic fire screens, room atomisers, diffusers, underfloor heating, and sound systems come into play.
A Touch of Retro
While we may be looking to the future, design trends are definitely throwing it back in their influences — all the way back to the 1970s and beyond. As we’ve seen with the meteoric rise of vintage in the fashion world, retro is making a comeback in interior design. Giving us bold oranges, browns, floral prints, curves, and statement objects, we expect that leaning into the whimsical world of retro will be all the rage in 2025.
Eclecticism is a popular look at the moment, as designers increasingly mix modern interiors with pops of retro to create unique, nostalgic rooms. Who knows, if ‘90s double denim is back in fashion, maybe ‘70s conversation pits will have their resurgence? We sure hope so.
Sustainable Statement Pieces
As we touched on above, consumption (and the startling rate of it) is at the forefront of the public consciousness at the moment as things like sustainability, supply chains, and textile waste gain more attention.
As something of a counter-culture to the ever-quickening cycles of influence, purchase, and disposal, designers have begun to be more selective and intentional about the pieces they use. Local businesses are being turned to for sustainably-sourced pieces and materials are more frequently being sourced from ethical suppliers. From handmade ceramics to locally-crafted furniture, we can expect to see a greater consideration of where objects and textiles come from in 2025.
Statement Lighting
Lastly, we turn our attention upwards to lights (unless you’re a fan of ‘the big light’, in which case, turn away now). In recent years, lighting has moved beyond pure functionality and transformed into something far more decorative and elaborate.
From mood lighting and fairy lights to LED strips and voice-activated lighting, the way you illuminate the rooms in your home says a lot about who you are. In 2025 we can expect this trend to continue and intensify. Designers are opting for bolder, more intricate and statement lighting options — from hyperrealistic lamps shaped like food items to statement smart chandeliers.
So, if you’re looking to stay on trend, get creative with your beige lampshades and opt for something more organic like Rattan or more maximalist like a velvet covering, perhaps.
